Donald's Quay

Opened on the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway.

Description

This quay was on the north bank of the River Clyde east of Bowling and west of Old Kilpatrick. It was named for Robert Donald of Mountblow House. It was the northern pier of a former route of the Erskine Ferry (Erskine House is just across the Clyde and the landowner Lord Blantyre owned land on either side of the river) known as the Ferrydyke and additionally saw use as a coal transshipment point for the Forth and Clyde Canal just to the north. The ferry crossing here was abandoned due to sand accumulation and moved further east.

During land reclamation for the building of the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway the quay was obliterated. Today Donald's Quay Light stands at its site. A footbridge over the line was installed to five access to the light.

To the north is the appropriately named Ferrydyke Bascule Bridge over the Forth and Clyde Canal, lock-keeper's cottage and ruined stables. The location of the quay was the western end of Antonine's Wall (Graham's Dyke). The terminal fort of the wall was just to the north, later the site of a bus garage.
